Guest: Dr. Richard Phillips, author, The Masculine Mandate
Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. Genesis 2:15
“Popular American culture has long put forward a vision of rugged masculinity. Postmodernity counters this vision with a disastrously feminized masculinity, surrendering men’s God-given roles to women and glorifying monosexualism that flies directly in the face of God’s purposes for creation. Meanwhile, men in the evangelical church hear that they should think of their lives as ego-driven ‘quests for identity.’” —The Masculine Mandate by Dr. Richard Phillips
Christian men today receive and follow all sorts of advice on masculinity. Some say it’s about doing adventurous things, others say it’s about being relevant in our modern age (cue the skinny jeans and hair product), still others say, well, there are endless visions of what men should be.
But what does the Bible say? And is the evangelical church in America fostering a biblical version of masculinity?
Dr. Richard Phillips, former tank officer in the U.S. Army and now senior minister at Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC and the author of The Masculine Mandate, joins us this weekend to explain the masculine call for men, especially in four areas.
