Topic: Are You Practicing Discernment?

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  1 John 4:1

Discernment is the ability to distinguish between truth and error.  It’s a sharp biblical worldview that follows Paul’s exhortation to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22).

The mantra in the Evangelical church today is to “Keep it positive—we need to be known for what we’re for, not what we’re against.”  This is error straight from hell and opens the door for all manner of false doctrines and false teachers to lead people away from God.

Notice when you read the New Testament how often Jesus, Paul, Peter and others point out God’s will (the good) while also identifying and warning against what is evil (e.g. 2 John 4:4-11).  This is our model of discernment.
