Guest: Tom Ascol, Pastor and Film Producer of By What Standard?

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, with an average weekly attendance of over five million people at affiliated churches and an overall membership of nearly 15 million.

A rare example of a Christian organization turning from theological liberalism, as it did in the 1970s and 1980s in an era known as the “conservative resurgence” (previously the denomination was pro-abortion), the SBC is now embroiled in another bellwether battle, primarily over three issues: women teaching men, race, and professing Christians with homosexual desires.

The worldview undergirding these issues is based on “Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Intersectionality”. At the 2019 SBC annual meeting, a resolution was passed “That critical race theory and intersectionality should only be employed as analytical tools subordinate to Scripture—not as transcendent ideological frameworks.”

The question is: Why should a flawed, Marx-based worldview with an unbiblical view of “social justice” be used at all by a professing body of believers? Is not the Word of God completely sufficient for understanding sociological and doctrinal issues?
